Xavier Esqueda

Mexico City, 1943. Painter and sculptor, essentially self-taught: he studied architecture briefly and in 1961 attended the ceramics workshop of Juan Soriano, with whom he formed a friendship. He began showing his work very young and, during the 1960s, exhibited at venues such as the Galería Antonio Souza and the Museo de Arte Moderno, besides taking part in exhibitions in the United States and Europe.

His painting combines figurative elements, geometric forms, everyday objects and imaginary settings, and has been related to fantastic art, metaphysical painting and certain strands of Pop Art and Op Art, while keeping an identity of its own; the critic Luis Ignacio Sáinz has pointed to the humour, irony and anguish in it.

Alongside painting he has produced a steady body of sculpture and art-objects, disciplines recognised by the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte. He has shown a particular interest in architecture and Art Deco, to which he devoted a study and a book. His work turns recognisable objects and situations into enigmatic images that play with scale, perspective and imagination, and remains a reference for understanding the imaginative, experimental side of Mexican painting in the second half of the twentieth century.

All the works shown here belong to the Galerías Castillo M.R. collection.
