Sergio Hernández

Born in Huajuapan de León, Oaxaca, in 1957. He studied at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas and at La Esmeralda between 1975 and 1981, and around 1985 learned printmaking in Peter Bramsen’s Paris workshop, guided by Francisco Toledo. His first influence was Tamayo. He works in fresco, oil, print, gold leaf on wood and lead; his subjects run from the codices and omens of the Conquest to mythology and the natural world. He received an honourable mention at the third Ibero-American Biennial at the Carrillo Gil (1982), the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic (2006) and the René Portocarrero International Prize (2014). Between 2023 and 2024 the Colegio de San Ildefonso gathered one hundred and forty-three of his works from twenty-five years. He is in the collections of the Museo de Arte Moderno, MARCO, the IAGO, the San Antonio Museum of Art and the Würth Museum.
