Biography
Figueres, Girona, 1904 — Figueres, 1989. He entered the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in 1922 and was expelled for good in 1926. In 1929, through Joan Miró, he approached the Paris surrealist group and met Gala; Breton expelled him from the group in 1938. «The Persistence of Memory» dates from 1931, and «Leda Atomica» and «The Madonna of Portlligat» from 1949. He appeared on the cover of Time in 1936; in 1979 he was elected an associate member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts and the Centre Pompidou devoted a retrospective to him, followed the next year by the Tate. The Teatre-Museu Dalí in Figueres opened in 1974 and the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí was created in 1983. The gallery’s pieces are prints from the 1960s and 1970s.
