Romeo Tabuena

He was born in Iloilo, Philippines, in 1921, and died in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, on 15 October 2015. He studied architecture at the Mapúa Institute of Technology and fine arts at the University of the Philippines. In Manila he belonged to the neo-realist group linked to the early years of the Philippine Art Gallery, alongside Hernando Ocampo, Vicente Manansala and César Legaspi.

After a period of study in New York and Paris, he arrived in San Miguel de Allende in 1955, where he studied at the Instituto Allende and lived until his death, keeping his Philippine citizenship. In 1957 he painted, on government commission, the mural «Filipiniana» for the Philippine Embassy in Washington. In 1965 he represented his country at the 8th São Paulo Biennial. He received the Philippine Presidential Merit Award in 2009 and, after his death, a recognition from the municipal government of San Miguel de Allende.
