A Catalan Artist of International Renown
Ramón Prats was born on September 26, 1928, in Barcelona, Spain, into a family with deep ties to the arts, the son of a well-known Catalan sculptor. His passion for artistic creation led him to train at several prestigious institutions, beginning his studies at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas in Santo Domingo and continuing his training at the Escuela de Artes Gráficas in Havana, Cuba. Later, his talent took him to New York, where he immersed himself in the artistic scene of the Art Students League and collaborated with the Associated American Artists Gallery.
Throughout his career, Prats left his mark on some of the world’s most important spaces, creating numerous murals at the United Nations headquarters in New York, as well as in cities such as Santo Domingo and Mexico City. His art has crossed borders, having been exhibited in more than 80 solo and group shows across countries in the Americas, Asia, and Europe.
In 1983, his outstanding career earned him recognition as Spanish Artist of the Year at the International House of New Orleans. He was also selected by the Spanish Consulate to represent his country’s artists during the celebrations of the Discovery of the Americas.
Ramón Prats’s legacy is still remembered in Mexico, where in 2001 the Cuernavaca City Government honored him for his contribution to art, and the Universidad de Morelos dedicated two major exhibitions to him in tribute to his «Creative World.»
It was in Mexico, however, that the Catalan painter found the sun, the space, and the serenity he needed to reconnect with himself and with the essence of his art. There, in an environment full of light and calm, Prats was able to rediscover his pictorial voice and that unique sense of self that defined him: «this is who I am.»
With simple living habits and a complete dedication to his work, Ramón Prats became a figure of international renown, whose work remains a testament to his creativity and passion for art.
