Manuel Felguérez

Valparaíso, Zacatecas, 1928 — Mexico City, 2020. He passed through San Carlos and La Esmeralda, where he assisted Francisco Zúñiga, and in 1954 a French government scholarship took him to the Grande Chaumière and Colarossi academies in Paris, where he worked with the sculptor Ossip Zadkine. He belonged to the Generación de la Ruptura, the first generation of Mexican abstract painters, together with Vicente Rojo, Fernando García Ponce and Lilia Carrillo. From 1959 he made more than fifty murals in Mexico, Colombia, the United States and South Korea, among them the metal wall of the Polyforum Siqueiros. He received the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes in 1988 and the Premio Nacional de Artes in 2016. The abstract art museum that bears his name in Zacatecas opened in 1998.
