Milagros, Spain, 1913 — Burgos, 1999. He trained in León and in 1933 went to Italy on a scholarship, where he studied the Renaissance masters. Manuel Bartolomé Cossío steered him toward mural painting. He served the Republic during the Civil War, left Spain in February 1939 and reached the Dominican Republic on 7 October of that year. There he painted around a hundred mural cycles, among them those in the church of Nuestra Señora de la Consolación, and directed the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes. The 1951 Guggenheim award led to his mural at the United Nations headquarters in New York (1953). He lived in Mexico from 1957 to 1959 and returned to Spain in 1960. The Fundación Vela Zanetti in León holds his collection.
