Janitzio Escalera was born in Morelia, Michoacán, in 1957. As a young man he was drawn to science and medicine, until painting finally won him over. In 1976 he moved to Mexico City to study at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado «La Esmeralda» and at the Academia de San Carlos. In 1987 he won first place in the Premio a las Artes Cuauhtémoc, organized by the INBA and the Cuauhtémoc borough, with a 72-square-meter mural.

His calling as a muralist also took him beneath the city: in November 1996 «Cosmos o la historia del principio» was installed at the Iztapalapa station of Metro Line 8, a polychrome ceramic relief in which a spinning top sets the creation of the universe in motion. For Laboratorios Merck, in Naucalpan, he painted a 42 by 12 meter mural devoted to the development of medicine, as if the science of his youth had returned by another road. He has presented some thirty solo exhibitions and more than seventy group shows in Mexico and abroad.
