Ixrael Montes

Born in 1971 in San José de las Flores, Santiago Jamiltepec, on the coast of Oaxaca. He studied visual arts at the Oaxaca school of fine arts and in 1996 took printmaking courses at the Rufino Tamayo workshop; that same year he received the Young Creators grant of the Oaxaca Institute of Cultures, and in 1998 its advanced grant. His work gathers the Mixtec, Afro-Mexican and mestizo inheritance of the coast. He has shown solo in Oaxaca, Mexico City, Guadalajara, San Miguel de Allende and Puerto Vallarta, with exhibitions such as «Caracteres incubando», «Zoología de Montes» and «Kábala»; in December 2024 he presented «Tótem», some fifty works in sculpture, painting, print and drawing. His work is held by the UNAM’s university museum, the IAGO and the Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez de Oaxaca.
