Aguascalientes, 1900 — Mexico City, 1983. At fifteen he founded the Círculo de Artistas Independientes in his home city; in 1917 he entered the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, from which he was expelled for challenging the school’s academic principles. From 1925 he taught drawing at the Ministry of Education and founded the Centro Popular de Arte de San Pablo and the School of Sculpture and Direct Carving. He edited Forma, the first Mexican magazine devoted to the visual arts, and co-founded the ¡30-30! movement with Fernando Leal and Ramón Alva de la Canal. In 1929 he published «Juguetes mexicanos» and took the drawings of the open-air schools to Seville; in 1938 he organised «Art in Mexican Political Life» in Paris. He received a Guggenheim fellowship in 1944 and the José Guadalupe Posada Medal in 1975. The Munal and the Reina Sofía hold his work.
