Valencia, 1897 — Mexico City, 1980. He studied at the San Carlos school of fine arts in Valencia and, on a scholarship, at the Real Academia de San Fernando in Madrid; he frequented Ramón Gómez de la Serna’s literary circle, illustrated covers for Blanco y Negro and was linked to the Escuela de Vallecas and the Sociedad de Artistas Ibéricos. In 1939 he crossed the Pyrenees on foot, passed through an internment camp in France and reached Veracruz aboard the Sinaia, at the invitation of Lázaro Cárdenas’s government. In Mexico he painted mainly landscape and, in the 1950s and 1960s — his most fertile years — experimented with abstraction and matter. In 1980 the Palacio de Bellas Artes gave him a retrospective; another, of more than a hundred works, filled the Museo de la Ciudad de México in 2015. The Reina Sofía lists him in its collection.
