Huatusco, Veracruz, 1890 — Mexico City, 1968. At seventeen a stipend from the Veracruz governor Teodoro A. Dehesa took him to San Carlos; at twenty-one his political cartoons earned him an interview with President Madero and a scholarship to Paris. Between 1914 and 1916 he published in La Vie Parisienne, Le Rire and La Baïonnette, and was made cultural attaché by Isidro Fabela. Back in Mexico he contributed to Revista de Revistas, Jueves de Excélsior, Hoy, El Universal and Novedades. The INBAL regards him as the foremost representative of Art Deco in Mexico; he worked in ink, watercolour, charcoal, oil, encaustic and gouache. He received the Mergenthaler Prize of the Inter American Press Association, and in 2012 his archive entered UNESCO’s Memory of the World register in Mexico.
