Alfredo Zalce

Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, 1908 — Morelia, 2003. He trained at the Academia de San Carlos with Germán Gedovius, Leandro Izaguirre and Sóstenes Ortega. In 1930 he was the first director of the Taxco school of painting and sculpture; in 1933 he was a founding member of the LEAR and in 1937 co-founded, with Leopoldo Méndez, Pablo O’Higgins and Luis Arenal, the Taller de la Gráfica Popular. He painted murals in Mexico City schools, in the community of Caltzontzin and in the Morelia government palace. His portfolio «Estampas de Yucatán», of 1945, is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He left some three thousand works. He received the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes in 2001, having twice declined it.
