Monterrey, 1871 — 1946. He entered the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes on a scholarship in 1890, with Santiago Rebull and Jesús F. Contreras as his teachers. Around 1899, sponsored by Phoebe Hearst, he travelled to Paris, where he lived for nine years, exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in 1905 and 1907 and won a prize there in 1908 with «La primavera». He returned to Mexico in 1909 and in 1913 was named director of the National Academy of Fine Arts; that same year he founded the Open-Air Painting School of Santa Anita, in Iztapalapa, and in 1926 took his students’ work to Europe. He later emigrated to the United States, where he painted several murals. The Blaisten Collection holds «La Fête Champêtre» and «Mancacoyota».
